Maybank was one of the first banks in Malaysia to support Apple Pay when it was launched last month, and unlike AmBank and Standard Chartered it even let debit card users in on the service. However, there was one subset of customers that were left out in the cold, and that was American Express users.
That changes now: the bank has just announced that its Amex credit and charge cards can now be used with Apple Pay. The process to enable Cupertino’s contactless payment service is exactly the same as other Maybank cards—just input the details into the Wallet app on your iPhone.
Once you do that, you can simply use your iPhone to pay for purchases at any merchant that has a contactless credit card terminal (and accepts American Express cards), using either Face ID or Touch ID for authentication. If you have an Apple Watch, you can just double-click your watch’s side button and tap it on the terminal instead, as long as the device is unlocked.
Unlike Samsung Pay and contactless cards like Visa payWave, there’s no limit to how much you can buy for each transaction, although you still have to adhere to your credit card’s monthly purchase limit (there’s usually no such hard limit for charge cards). As before, Maybank and Maybank Islamic commercial and corporate cards are still not supported by the service.
