Several parts of Peninsular Malaysia including the Klang Valley had suffered a power outage at 12:39pm this afternoon due to an issue at a Transmission Main Intake (PMU) station in Yong Peng, Johor. The power disruption not only caused inconvenience to consumer and business users, but it has also affected RapidKL rail and telco services.
Following full restoration at 3:02pm, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the power utility company for Peninsular Malaysia has assured that its electricity supply is reliable and stable. As reported by Bernama, TNB President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Baharin Din said the assurance was proven when power in several areas in Peninsular Malaysia was quickly restored by TNB’s technical team following a blackout. He added that the national grid has smart features that facilitate the work of tracing and restoring supply.
As updated by TNB at 2:15pm today, several locations have their electricity supply restored within 20-40 minutes but other locations in the Klang Valley require more time to troubleshoot and to restore power. The PMU issue had caused a loss of 2.2GW of electricity which is equivalent to 10% of the total electricity supply demand for Peninsular Malaysia. TNB said the PMU breakdown was an isolated case and it didn’t involve any damage and was fully operational.
A PMU is the interconnection point between the 132kV or 275kV grid to the distribution system and it is used to convert electricity to lower voltage to be sent out to smaller distribution stations and substations before it goes to consumers.
Baharin said “The restoration of supply could be implemented efficiently as a result of TNB’s continuous investment in modernising the grid including digitising it so that the supply network is more stable, flexible and consistent.”
“Our ability to restore supply today is due to TNB’s large and continuous investment to upgrade the system with the support of the Energy Commission and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources,” he added.
