Malaysian allegedly loses his car after renting it out on Trevo

[ UPDATE 8:30PM 6/7/2022 ] : Trevo has since provided us a statement over the issue, which you can find here.

Just over two years ago, Socar Malaysia introduced Trevo, it’s Airbnb-like platform where people can rent out their cars on a short term basis to others. However, one Trevo user now claims to have had a nightmare using the platform to rent out his car, leading to his car allegedly going missing altogether.

According to Nor Azam Budin on Twitter, after seeing a rave review of Trevo on social media, he decided to try it out, putting his Toyota Alphard up onto the platform. Still a little wary about letting others use his car, he originally turned down a request that wanted his car for three days. Later on, Nor Azam would get another booking at 3pm, 29 June 2022 for a one-day loan of his car, from 8.30pm that day itself to 8.30pm the next day. Seeing as it was just for a day, Nor Azam accepted the request. A Trevo employee proceeded to head to his home and collect the Toyota Alphard to deliver it to the customer who booked it.

When it was time for Nor Azam to get back his car though, Nor Azam was told by the Trevo employee who went to pick it up that the customer had told him that they’ll return the car himself. Sensing something amiss, Nor Azam proceeded to contact Trevo support, who in turn told him that the customer had passed on the car to a friend of his. This friend then apparently took the Alphard all the way to Banting. Nor Azam decided to message the customer himself, only to find that he was mostly dodging his questions.

The next day, with his car still missing, Nor Azam proceeded to file a police report. Police though informed him that his case would first need to be handled by the Commercial Crimes Division as it involves Trevo. He was also told that his insurance wouldn’t cover his missing car as it doesn’t cover incidents that involve renting it out on Trevo, which caught Nor Azam by surprise as he claims Trevo’s FAQ section never revealed that.

Worse still, when Trevo brought documentation regarding the customer who took the car, he found that Trevo’s verification process to be wanting. The user supposedly managed to verify his account despite sending in a picture of him with dark shades on, as well as allegedly using another person’s identification card. Nor Azam also claimed that he found another Trevo user whose Toyota Hiace went missing after renting it out on Trevo. Apparently, this other case involved the same IC number as shown in Trevo’s documentation of the user who took his Alphard.

As of time of writing, Nor Azam’s car is still missing. However, after his tweets went viral, Trevo’s management has apparently gotten in touch with Nor Azam, and has given him a temporary solution by providing him a car for the time being. Nor Azam also claims that Trevo will compensate him if his Toyota Alphard can’t be found.

Trevo has also replied to Nor Azam’s tweets on Twitter, stating:

“We are deeply sorry about this and have been in contact with En Nor Azam to provide assistance and updates. We’re also working with the police & conducting investigations to resolve this case via our SOPs to ensure adequate protection for car owners,” – Trevo

We’ve reached out to Trevo for further clarification and will update this article accordingly when they do provide a statement. In the meantime, if you see Nor Azam’s white Toyota Alphard with the number plate VHL 805 roaming about, you can contact him at +6019-507 8005.
