Everyone’s probably familiar with Boston Dynamics‘ Spot robot dog by now. The little yellow dog that danced with BTS and has a hand to help you open doors? Well, as it turns out popular smartphone maker Xiaomi also has a robot dog though its name is rather on the nose: it’s called the CyberDog, but what can it do? Can you buy one? Will it take over the world?! On this episode of Trends, we find out.
The CyberDog is Xiaomi’s robot dog platform that’s designed to test various components and technologies that the company has developed. Its 11-sensor array, for example was pulled from their smart car project, while the servo motors powering the legs could make an appearance in future Xiaomi products. That’s why Xiaomi has produced this and invited engineers and even members of the public to come and “hack” it.
As a result, you can’t currently buy this dog in Malaysia. There are 1,000 units globally and only three of those in Malaysia. But Xiaomi will be taking the dog on tour at various Xiaomi stores around the country so you could run into one at your local Xiaomi store.
This CyberDog is also pre-programmed with a number of commands, so it can roll over, shake, sit and run around. With its vision sensors it can also follow you around while avoiding obstacles. The CyberDog has a run time of 40 minutes but takes 160 minutes to charge. It can also run at speeds up to 3.2m per second, and is splash proof.
At its core, the CyberDog is powered by an NVIDIA supercomputer, featuring 384 cuda cores, 48 Tensor Cores, a 6 Carmel ARM CPU, and 2 deep-learning acceleration engines, allowing the dog to process 21 trillion operations per second.
