MHflypass ASEAN: How Malaysia Airlines aims to compete with AirAsia’s Super Plus pass

Malaysia Airlines has announced its own “super pass”, MHflypass ASEAN, to compete with the AirAsia Super+ pass. The price starts at RM1,499 for the cheapest package, but there’s an introductory offer of RM200 off from now until 5 June 2022.

What’s MHflypass ASEAN?

Like the AirAsia Super+ Pass, MHFlypass ASEAN gives you “better flexibility for your travel plans” by being able to fly multiple times for a year in the ASEAN region. The places you can fly to and from KL include Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Yangon, Manila, Hanoi, or Bali—but this all depends on which pass you take.

There are also things you’d need to take note of. The MHflypass ASEAN is only available to purchase for Enrich members. But, of course, you’re able to sign up for Enrich online. The price for the pass also does not include tax prices and other surcharges—and the pass only lets you fly for up to three return trips (or six quotas of one-way trips) in the year. But here are the added benefits to the pass:

  • Priority check-in
  • Priority boarding
  • Priority baggage drop
  • Standard seat selection
  • No blackout dates (subject to seat availability)
  • Unlimited ‘Go Show’ (the ability to board an earlier flight is only applicable to flights on the same day, subject to seat availability)
  • Unlimited free date change (subject to seat availability)
  • Extra baggage allowance: 35kg Check-in and 7kg Cabin
  • Complimentary snacks/meals and beverages
  • Earn up to 2,699 Enrich Points

The priority perks are only available for flights operated by Malaysia Airlines. The 35kg check-in baggage allowance is applicable for flights operated by Malaysia Airlines, while 20kg check-in baggage allowance is applicable for flights operated by MASwings.

Zone 1

The cheapest package is Zone 1—which costs RM1,499. It covers flights to/from Kuala Lumpur – Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Ho Chi Minh, Phnom Penh, and Yangon.

Zone 2

The second package you can get is Zone 2—which costs RM2,099. It covers flights to/from Kuala Lumpur – Manila, Hanoi, and Bali. it might be a lot fewer options for flight locations, but the locations are generally further away.

Zone 3

Zone 3 is the most expensive option at RM2,699—and it is also a bit more complicated than the other ones. Here are the destinations that this package covers:

  • Fly to/from Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Yangon – Alor Setar, Langkawi, Penang, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bahru, Johor Bahru.
  • Fly to/from Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Yangon – Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Labuan, Sandakan, Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Bintulu.
  • Fly to/from Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya – Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Yangon.
  • Fly to/from Singapore – Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Bangkok, Phuket, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Yangon.
  • Fly to/from Bangkok, Phuket – Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Yangon.
  • Fly to/from Manila – Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Yangon.
  • Fly to/from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi – Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Manila, Phnom Penh, Yangon.
  • Fly to/from Phnom Penh – Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Yangon.
  • Fly to/from Yangon – Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Surabaya, Singapore, Bangkok, Phuket, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phnom Penh.

If you’ve noticed, the flight locations do not include Kuala Lumpur. So, those who stay in the Klang Valley and want to use this package will have to travel to either Alor Setar, Langkawi, Penang, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bahru, or Johor Bahru first to make full use of it. But this means that it is good news for those who stay in these locations in the Peninsula. It also covers locations in East Malaysia like Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Labuan, Sandakan, Kuching, Sibu, Miri, and Bintulu.

This also means that all the flights would likely be transit flights. You’d need to travel between the two ASEAN locations via Kuala Lumpur.

If you live in Kuala Lumpur, it would make more sense for you to get Zone 1 or Zone 2—depending on where you’d like to go. You can start purchasing the passes here.

From now until 5 June, you would be able to get the passes at a RM200 discount. Here are the current prices:

  • Zone 1 – RM1,499 RM1,299
  • Zone 2 – RM2,099 RM1,899
  • Zon 3 – RM2,699 RM2,499

According to Najib, who has flown to Jakarta quite often, the MHflypass ASEAN is worth it if you fly the full three return flights in a year. It’s also got a lot more benefits than something like the AirAsia Super+ Pass like the extra baggage allowance and the unlimited “Go Show” perk. A flight to Jakarta can cost around RM300-RM400 for a one-way trip. Getting the RM1,299 Zone 1 pass would mean that six one-way trips should at least cost around RM216 to make the offer worthwhile—so it already seems like a great deal if you’re heading to Jakarta.

But the Zone 3 pass seems utterly confusing and isn’t worthwhile for people who live in KL. The flights also seem like you’d have to only make transit flight trips which is pretty tiring and time-consuming compared to like a straight flight.
