Garmin has long been one of the names to go to if you’re in the market for premium smartwatches and fitness trackers for a while now. Their latest product now available Malaysia carries on this idea but specifically targets divers, the Garmin Descent G1 series.
Garmin Descent G1 Malaysia pricing and availability
The Garmin Descent G1 series will feature two models, which includes the base model and the Descent G1 Solar. It starts at RM2,570 for the regular Garmin Descent G1, while the Garming Descent G1 Solar will cost more at RM3,030.
Garmin Descent G1 specs
The Garmin Descent G1 will come in two flavours, the regular Descent G1 and the Descent G1 Solar which, as its name implies, has solar charging glass over it so that you can charge it up while using it. Other than that though, it’s largely the same watch between the two of them. It has a 0.9-inch, 176 x 176p resolution transflective memory-in-pixel display. The lens itself is made of sapphire crystal while the bezel and the case are made of fiber-reinforced polymer. It measures 45.5mm wide and weighs 61g. The watch band meanwhile measures 22mm and is QuickFit compatible.
As for battery life, Garmin says you’ll be able to get up to 25 hours with it in dive mode, while using it in smartwatch mode gets you up to 21 days of use. If you use it with GPS on, you should be able to get up to 26 hours with ‘max battery GPS mode’ able to power you for up to 56 hours. GPS expedition mode meanwhile gets up to 27 days of use with battery saver mode itself able to last you 48 days. If you get the Descent G1 Solar meanwhile those numbers get significantly higher. You could stretch it by an extra 103 days in smartwatch mode, an additional 13 hours in GPS mode, 149 hours more in Max Battery GPS mode while Garmin says it’s possible for unlimited battery life in battery saver and GPS expedition mode. This of course assumes it’s getting at least 3 hours in the outdoor sun.
“Whether you are looking to purchase your first dive computer or wanting to support your active lifestyle, our Descent G1 Series is the ideal companion for all types of divers who appreciate having a multisport smartwatch for all other aspects of life topside. Descent G1 Solar builds upon Garmin’s innovative dive technology line-up with the addition of solar charging, allowing customers more time to enjoy their topside activities,” – Scoppen Lin, Garmin Asia Assistant General Manager
The Descent G1 series has a 10 ATM Dive water rating, meaning it should be good for up to 100 meters of depth under water. It has a multi-gas mode too supporting air, Nitrox and Trimix. The onboard sensors, trackers and tools include a heart rate monitor, pulse oximeter, underwater compass, surface interval time and no-fly time, tide information and a diving log. You won’t be able to store any music on the Decent G1’s 32MB storage, but you can link it via the Garmin Dive app on both Android or iOS smartphones to then control your tunes and sync your notifications too.
Furthermore, you can pair the Decent G1 series with an inReach Mini satellite communicator. This means you’ll be able to send and receive messages and trigger an SOS signal in case of an emergency. There’s an optional inReach Mini Dive Case as well which you can use to store the inReach Mini. Alternatively, you can pair it to the Garmin Connect Mobile app and let your friends and family track your location when you’re out and about. If an incident is detected, the app will then send a distress signal to your emergency contacts.
The regular Garmin Descent G1 will be available in Slate Grey and Powder Grey colourways, while the Garmin Descent G1 Solar is available in Black and Hurricane Blue. For more information on the Garmin Descent G1 series, you can click here to visit its product page.
