Until we get a better Apple mouse, this is how one guy “fixed” its design flaw

Apple products are usually so sleek and luxurious, but they can come with some of the most awful design flaws—like the Apple Magic Mouse’s port being at the bottom, which means that you can’t use it while it’s charging. However, YouTuber Matty Benedetto of Unnecessary Inventions—who has invented a few Apple-related items before—came up with a pretty hilarious solution.

“On the surface, (Apple’s Magic Mouse) is a really well-designed product. It’s Apple’s version of their very own wireless Bluetooth mouse that works actually surprisingly well,” said Benedetto.

According to Sofie, our Head of Graphics who has been using the Apple Magic Mouse for more than a year, he says that using the mouse is pretty seamless—like using the MacBook’s trackpad. He finds it easier to edit graphics and videos using it, but he would agree that charging it can be a bit of a hassle.

“If I want to charge it, the port is at the bottom so I can’t use it while it’s charging. However, I don’t really have to charge it too often—-it’s more of a monthly inconvenience. I will just charge it at night when I’m not using it,” he remarked.

So is there a way to charge your Apple Magic Mouse and use it at the same time? Benedetto aimed to fixed the issue. First, he tried to replace the mouse’s charging cable with a “better charging cable”—which is an L-shaped cable that lets the mouse rest closer to the table.

But, that’s not enough. After adding a couple of ball bearings, and 3D-printed housing he’s designed himself, the mouse is then able to work while being plugged in. But the result seems remarkably similar to a bulkier mouse—and something that totally isn’t the Apple aesthetic.

Unfortunately, after all the effort put into the design, Benedetto came to the realisation that the Apple Magic Mouse is rendered inoperable when charging. Despite his best efforts, there’s still not a way to use the mouse the way that Apple doesn’t want you to.

“… a two and a half trillion-dollar company doesn’t do anything by accident. Every single move that they make is completely calculated,” continued Benedetto.

What if Apple made a good mouse

There’s no sign of any new versions of the Apple Magic Mouse coming out anytime soon. But if there was one, we can only hope that there would be a way for us to charge it while using it.
