Ikea released an old-school “lantern” that’s secretly a Bluetooth speaker with a Spotify Tap button

Ikea has unveiled an adorable little Bluetooth speaker that also doubles as an old-school “lantern”-like lamp, which looks like something you can bring out camping. The Vappeby speaker lamp—which is what it’s called—also has its own Spotify-Tap button.

“Music in the garden or on the balcony? Bring Vappeby speaker lamp outside and fill relaxing times with your favourite songs,” wrote Ikea.

It’s a funny-looking thing—almost mushroom-like. But it does look like one of those old-school lamps you could theoretically bring in something like a dungeon or a mining cave… just Ikea-fied. Up close, you’re able to see that it’s not an old-school lantern at all, but rather a modern lamp with buttons for Bluetooth and Spotify.

According to Ikea, the white LED “gives a pleasant glow and adds a decorative touch to a table and is practical if you need a little extra light outdoors”. You could use its handle to “easily carry the speaker lamp wherever you like”. It also has a built-in rechargeable battery.

As for the speaker aspect of the Vappeby, it has a Spotify Tap playback—which is a companion feature to get tunes playing “with a single tap”. According to Spotify, devices like Samsung Galaxy Buds and Sony Linkbuds also have the same Spotify Tap function. It also is able to generate music based on your taste, and if you want to listen to something else—just press the big round button again. The Vappeby seems to be the first non-earbuds to have this feature.

Even though it has a glaringly obvious button just for Spotify, you can connect and play from whatever music platform you want from your phone, computer, or any other Bluetooth-enabled device. The Vappeby has “360-degree sound”, which Ikea says means you’re able to hear music play “clearly and distinctly, no matter where you and your friends are sitting”.

Additionally, it has an IP65 rating—which means that it has dust and water splash resistance. You’re also able to use the speaker lamp for up to 12 hours, and charge it via the included USB-C cable. But you need a charging brick, though. You can read more information on the Vappeby through the Ikea site.

It’s on sale for USD 64.99 (RM274.42) for certain countries. It’s not available in Malaysia, yet—but would you get this cute little speaker/lamp? It doesn’t seem like it would light up anything too well, it looks more like something that can create a little bit of mood lighting. But the Spotify Tap function is pretty neat.
