Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has announced that the borders between Malaysia and Singapore will reopen fully on 1st April as Malaysia begins its transition to the endemic phase. This includes the land border between Johor and Singapore where individuals can travel with their own private vehicles.
Fully vaccinated travellers will be able to cross the border without undergoing quarantine and conducting a test upon arrival. This will be applicable for both land and air travel between the two countries, and there’s no daily quota. Land crossings will be exempted from pre-departure COVID-19 testing 48 hours before travel, however, it is still required for air travel between the two countries.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the announcement reflects the strong relationship and cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore, and it will deliver a positive impact on the recovery efforts for the economy and well-being of the two countries.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said today’s announcement is a significant milestone in the transition towards living with COVID-19. He added that the announcement reflects the strong collaboration both countries have enjoyed throughout the pandemic and will help both countries emerge stronger from this crisis.
At the moment, Singapore and Malaysia are offering quarantine-free travel through designated vaccinated travel lanes (VTL) which include flights between Singapore-KLIA and Singapore and Penang, as well as designated buses between Singapore and Johor. Under the VTL, there’s a limited quota and travellers must book designated flights or bus tickets.
As announced earlier, fully vaccinated travellers entering Malaysia are no longer required to be quarantined or apply for MyTravelPass from 1st April. International visitors are required to take a PCR test 48 hours before travel and an RT-Antigen test 24 hours upon arrival. Unvaccinated travellers can still enter the country but they must undergo mandatory quarantine and testing. The Ministry of Health will share the full protocol on their website.
UPDATE: 48-hour pre-departure PCR test is still required for air travel between Malaysia and Singapore after 1st April.
