U Mobile has introduced its new U25 and U35 prepaid plans which offer “unlimited” data from as low as RM20/month. Obviously, these cheap unlimited plans come with a speed cap but U Mobile allows its users to enjoy 30 hours of uncapped speed.
The U Mobile U25 prepaid costs RM25/month but it is now offered with a promo price of RM20/month. It offers “unlimited” data capped at 3Mbps along with unlimited calls within Malaysia. However, take note that the plan doesn’t come with any data for hotspot usage. If you need to share your data, you can purchase 3GB hotspot data for RM3 which is valid for 3 days.
Meanwhile, the higher U35 plan which costs RM35/month offers “unlimited” data at 6Mbps, unlimited calls within Malaysia, and 3GB of hotspot data. Both plans come with 30 hours of speed booster which you can enjoy for 1 hour per day. The speed booster can be activated via the MyUMobile app and it allows you to enjoy faster speeds subject to network availability.
If you compare with the previous Giler Unlimited GX38 which is offered for RM35/month, the older plan offers double the hotspot quota at 6GB per month. However, it loses out on the speed booster feature, so you’re limited to 6Mbps at all times.
Like any cheap “unlimited” plan, there’s also the dreaded FUP. According to the FAQ, the new prepaid plans come with a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) for their unlimited data. On the cheaper U25, it gets a FUP quota of 30GB while the U35 plan gets a higher FUP quota of 100GB. Once you hit your limit, your speed will be throttled to 512kbps until the pass is renewed.
It is also mentioned that even with the hourly speed booster enabled, your speed is still capped at 512kbps when you’ve exhausted your FUP quota. To regain full speed, U Mobile offers a speed booster add-on of RM5 for 24 hours.
The new SIM pack costs RM10 and it comes preloaded with RM6 credit valid for 5 days. Also included is 1GB of free high-speed data. U Mobile is promoting its prepaid service as 5G ready, however, they have not made any announcement to participate in Digital Nasional Berhad’s free 5G trial or wholesale service.
