Xiaomi teams up with Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 for upcoming Redmi K50 gaming phone

Xiaomi is introducing its new Redmi K50 smartphones this week which will succeed last year’s K40 series. Ahead of the announcement event in China, Xiaomi has revealed a partnership with Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 for its upcoming gaming phone.

The folks at Gizmochina have shared a pic of the special edition device. It features a grey back with Petronas green slipes that slope towards the middle like an hourglass. There’s also a prominent AMG Petronas F1 branding at the back and the camera module appears to come with RGB lights like its predecessor.

According to their Weibo post, Redmi is working closely with the F1 team to create new technologies for enthusiasts to enjoy and to deliver the performance they’ve never experienced before.

In terms of specs, the Redmi K50 gaming edition phone is expected to come with a 6.67″ AMOLED display that pushes a 120Hz refresh rate and a 480Hz touch sampling rate. For better durability, it even gets Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus. Under the hood, it will run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 gen 1, just like the current Xiaomi 12 series.

Based on teasers, the device will get a 4,700mAh battery and it supports 120W fast charging via USB-C. Like the previous model, it will also come with pop-up shoulder buttons for better tactile gaming controls. In the camera department, the device gets a triple-camera setup which includes a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, while the front gets a 20MP Sony IMX596 shooter.

The Redmi K50 gaming edition phone is launching on 16th February at 7:00pm in China. It isn’t clear if this phone will launch in global markets but there’s also the possibility that it could be rebranded as a Xiaomi or Poco smartphone.

Prior to this, Xiaomi has also collaborated with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team for its Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 Team Edition. It is basically a Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 with a black and silver colour scheme, along with green accents.
