Back in October of last year, Samsung released a feature in the One UI 4.0 beta called RAM Plus. It gave users the option of using 4GB of system internal storage as virtual memory, essentially giving users a little more memory capacity to keep things running in the background. With the release of the Galaxy S22 lineup, the Korean giant is also releasing One UI 4.1 based on Android 12. As its name implies it’s a fairly minor update to One UI 4.0, but does update RAM Plus to let users choose up to 8GB of virtual memory now.

RAM Plus now allows users to select the exact amount of virtual memory they’d like, from as low as just 2GB up until 8GB. We don’t actually expect those with a Galaxy S22 series device to use this feature seeing as they come with plenty of memory already, but for smartphones down Samsung’s product stack, it could be quite useful for some. Not only can you pick more virtual memory, the flexibility to go as low as just 2GB of virtual memory means it’ll still be beneficial for entry-level devices without much storage to begin with. However, you’ll need to wait for Samsung to make One UI 4.1 available on your device first, as right now One UI 4.1 is slated to come with the Galaxy S22 series first.

Of course, it’s worth pointing out that having all of this extra virtual RAM by using the system’s storage likely won’t see any noticeable improvement in performance or gaming. Actual memory is much, much faster than even the latest forms of internal storage. Instead, the RAM Plus feature on One UI 4.1 is likely more beneficial for heavy multitaskers who don’t want their apps from getting killed in the background due to the device running out of memory. It’s becoming a more common feature on Android devices over the years, but Linux enthusiasts might already know it as ‘swap space’ on Linux systems.

In the meantime you can also learn more about the Galaxy S22, S22+ as well as the Galaxy S22 Ultra from our announcement posts. And while technically it runs on One UI Tab 4, Samsung had also revealed the new Galaxy Tab S8 series during their Galaxy Unpacked event too.
