After committing to four years of security updates for new Galaxy devices launched from 2019, Samsung appears to be upping its game by committing to five years of updates for its latest Galaxy flagship series including the Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy S21, and Tab S8 series. On top of that, the devices are also eligible to receive four major Android OS upgrades. This was revealed in a leaked press release that was shared by serial leakster Evan Blass.
At the footnote of the press release, it mentioned “Devices eligible for four generations of Android OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates currently include Galaxy S22 Series (S22/S22+/S22 Ultra), S21 series (S21/S21+/S21 Ultra/S21 FE), Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, and Tab S8 series (Tab S8/Tab S8+/Tab S8 Ultra)”.
This is good news for consumers as Samsung buyers will be able to enjoy greater peace of mind with longer software and security support. Since the Galaxy S22 is launching with Android 12 out of the box, this could mean that the latest flagship models could be upgraded to Android 16 with an additional year of security updates.
As a comparison, Google’s latest Pixel 6 series only supports three years of Android updates and five years of security updates. The industry leader is still Apple as the latest iOS 15 still supports the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus from 2015.
Among the Android players, Samsung seems to be consistent with its software support promise and they have recently rolled out Android 12 update with One UI 4 for the Samsung Galaxy S10 series that was launched in 2019. The same can’t be said for Nokia. Its flagship Nokia 9 PureView which was launched around the same time as the Galaxy S10 series is still stuck on Android 10 and HMD Global has given up on updating the device to Android 11 despite its promise to provide two years of operating system updates.
Samsung is launching the Galaxy S22 series tomorrow during its Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event. Samsung Malaysia is expected to offer pre-orders for the Galaxy S22 shortly after the global launch event with stocks expected to be available a couple of weeks later. According to a recent leak, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to be priced from RM4,999 and it appears to be running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor.
