Oppo Find X5 Pro: Here’s everything we know about the new flagship

Serial leakster Roland Quandt has obtained images and specification details on Oppo’s next flagship device, the Find X5 Pro 5G. Currently, the Find X3 Pro 5G is Oppo’s flagship and there is no Find X4 because 4 in Chinese numerology represents an unlucky number. So, based on the leaks, what do we know about the new flagship device?

For starters, the Oppo Find X5 Pro 5G is said to come in Ceramic Black and Ceramic White. Despite being called “ceramic”, the rear is not made of ceramic, but rather just glass. The type of glass used on the rear wasn’t mentioned.

The Oppo Find X5 Pro shares the same design language as the Find X3 Pro like having an aluminium frame with rounded edges. The button placements is similar as well with the volume buttons on the left and power button on the right. A speaker grill, USB Type C port, a microphone hole, and the SIM tray is located at the bottom. One way it differs from its predecessor is with the inclusion of eSIM support. The phone also gets and IP68 water and dust ingression protection.

At the front is where the 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED display is housed and protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus that curves into the frame at the edge. The panel is said to feature a resolution of 3216 x 1440 pixels and capable of producing a 10-bit colour depth with HDR. The LTPO tech also enables a dynamic refresh rate up to 120Hz. The leaks did not mention the minimum refresh rate of the display nor its brightness figure. Finally, there will be an under-screen fingerprint sensor, presumably the optical kind like its predecessor, and an earpiece speaker which doubles as a loudspeaker at the top of the display.

The brains of the phone will be Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, clocked at 3GHz. It combines a single ARM Cortex-X2 ultra-high-end core, three ARM Cortex-A710 and four Cortex-A510 cores. The SoC has an integrated 5G modem alongside other radios like Wi-Fi 6e, Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC. Managing memory and storage duties are 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage respectively. According to the leaks, there is only one RAM and storage variant at the moment with no option to expand storage. Out of the box, the device will run on Android 12 with Oppo’s ColorOS 12.1 user interface on top.

Powering the device is a 5000mAh battery that supports 80W fast charging with Oppo’s SuperVOOC feature. Wireless charging is onboard as well, however no word on the wireless charging specification in this leak. For comparison, the Oppo Find X3 Pro sported a 4500mAh battery and supports 65W fast wired charging via SuperVOOC 2.0 and 30W fast wireless charging via AirVOOC wireless charger.

Oppo looks like it’s going big with the camera for this generation, topping its previous benchmark set by the Find X3 Pro. The Find X5 Pro will be the first Find X model to be given the Hasselblad treatment. The rear camera module looks similar in design to its predecessor in that it’s a rounded hump located on the left of the phone. The difference is that the Oppo Find X5 Pro’s camera module has a unique trapezoidal shape with the 2 camera sensors shifted to the left side.

The sensors in both cameras are the Sony IMX766 which Oppo first used in the Reno 5 Pro+. The IMX766 features a 50MP, 1/1.56-inch sensor capable of shooting 10-bit colour depth. The primary camera has f/1.7 aperture and a 80-degree wide field of view. The secondary unit is an ultra-wide unit with a f/2.2 aperture. Both sensors feature optical image stabilisation (OIS). There is also a 13MP telephoto camera with f/2.4 aperture present on the right side which paired with the main camera, can produce a 5x hybrid zoom and a 20x digital zoom. Other hardware found on the camera module are Oppo’s omnidirectional all pixel phase detection auto focus (PDAF), a possible colour sensor, and an LED flash.

For selfies, Oppo uses a 32MP f/2.4 front camera with a Sony IMX709 sensor that has a punch-hole on the top-left corner of the display.

Oppo’s brand new image neural processing unit (NPU), MariSilicon X makes its debut on the Find X5 Pro. It claims to provide 4x greater image clarity thanks to the powerful image signal processor. Oppo is also claiming to be the first to offer 4K AI HDR night video capturing on an Android smartphone. What it essentially does is provides a live preview of the AI noise reduction processing which is typically done in post processing after the video has been saved.

Something to take with a pinch of salt is Oppo’s claims of “each frame looking just as rich and defined as a still photo”. Other notable features of the new NPU is real-time RAW image processing, RGBW Pro Mode, high input/output bandwidth allowing for more data transfer and greater power efficiency. If you happen to forget the name of the processor, Oppo was nice enough to print the phrase “powered by MariSilicon” between the 2 main camera sensors.

As for what the Hasselblad collaboration brings to the table, it is unknown at this point with nothing about it mentioned in the leaks. However, we can draw some educated guesses from the Hasselblad and Oppo owned OnePlus partnership. On the OnePlus 9 series, Hasselblad helped tune the colour profile and the UI of the camera to resemble classic Hasselblad cameras. There is also the ability to capture wide 8:3 aspect ratio images and panoramic photos with 30mm or 45mm focal lengths. Therefore, we can expect to see at least these features to be offered on the Oppo Find X5 Pro alongside with new features if any.

So, how much would it cost you to purchase a device of this calibre? Well, according to rumours, the Find X5 Pro will be priced at 1200 Euros (~ RM5,750) and will be announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) which will be held from 28th February to 3rd March 2022. Do note that European phone pricing costs significantly more than Malaysia, so expect it to be priced lower if it is sold here.
