We received the Lego Majestic Tiger set (31129) just in time for Chinese New Year, and it’s already a part of our office decoration. But the majestic Lego set first had to be built. Our resident Lego builder, Amin, shared a few thoughts about his build experience.
Lego’s Majestic Tiger set is basically the set to have as we celebrate Chinese New Year—because who wouldn’t love to have such a great finished set as a centerpiece for the Year of the Tiger?
According to Qin Gang, China’s ambassador to the US, the tiger is the symbol of bravery, wisdom, and strength in Chinese culture. Those born in the year of the Tiger are “courageous and energetic, love a challenge or competition, and are prepared to take risks”. Lego hopes that this tiger-centric set will encourage its builders to “rise to new heights” and seize opportunities as they take on 2022.
First, it’s important to note that the Majestic Tiger set doesn’t just let you build a majestic tiger. You’re able to build a tiny little bird piece along with it—but you can also take the pieces apart and build the set into a red panda or a koi fish. The set is meant to be built and rebuilt, but its most impressive-looking build is the tiger itself.
According to Amin, it was an “interesting and satisfying build”. He said that it took him about one to two hours for the full set build—but keep in mind that he’s someone who’s already used to building a lot of complicated Lego sets, and it might take longer for someone who isn’t used to it yet.
One of his favourite things to note about his build was how detailed the tiger’s stripes were. There are a couple of printed Lego pieces that have both black and orange, and Amin pointed out that these specific pieces are pretty much sought-after Lego pieces. But most of the bricks that made up the stripes were either all in black or all in orange, and they curved and fit right into each other perfectly to create the stripes.
As he started to complete the tiger’s body, he noted that its limbs, head, and certain parts of the torso were posable—just like an action figure. Its paws were also “extremely detailed… like a cat’s paws”.
As for the tiger’s head, Amin remarked that it was full of the tiniest details—even when incomplete. The yellowish tinge for its teeth, the cat-like angry eyes, and the cute pink nose are all very impressive details.
The set also lets you build a small bird decoration piece that can complement the Lego tiger. Amin said that this specific piece “wasn’t really a challenge” compared to the tiger, as it was only a few inches big.
According to Lego, the 755-piece set is “great for kids who have a passion for animals and playing out action in the rainforest”. It’s recommended for kids aged 9 and up.
Personally, my favourite bit of the set was that the tiger has a little pink butt detail—something you can see if you lift its tail. It’s that kind of attention to detail in a Lego set that I appreciate, as I don’t think I’ll get bored too easily looking at it. The fact that it’s posable is also very cool.
