Exynos 2200 is still coming despite delays, will it power the Galaxy S22 in Malaysia?

If you’ve been following Samsung Galaxy flagship devices, you would probably know that the Korean smartphone maker typically releases its devices in either Qualcomm Snapdragon and Samsung Exynos processor variants. After missing its scheduled 11th January announcement, many had speculated that Samsung’s new Exynos 2200 mobile chip is having production issues and as a result, Galaxy S22 devices worldwide would be running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 across the board. According to a recent report, Samsung has refuted the Exynos 2200 allegations and insisted that everything is fine.

Now it looks like the Exynos 2200 might still make it for the Galaxy S22 as revealed by a leaked video for the new chip. Even serial leakster Ice Universe has a hunch that the new Exynos chip will be released soon.

In the short teaser video, it says “Play time is over”, which is the same tagline used in its initial teaser posted last year. In the last scene, it showed Samsung Exynos 2200 while promising “Console quality graphics now on mobile”.

At the moment, the Galaxy S22 series is expected to launch on the 8th of February and the device should be available to purchase in most global markets starting from the 24th of February 2022. Since Malaysia is a key market, we expect Samsung Malaysia to start accepting preorders shortly after the global event.

Looking at the timing, Samsung should have started production for the Galaxy S22 series and that means they would have decided on which chip to use on their latest flagships. If there was no issue as claimed, it is surprising that Samsung has missed its 11th January reveal for the Exynos 2200 chip without issuing any statement. It was alleged that the Exynos 2200 was delayed due to thermal issues with the GPU as it struggled to run at 1.9GHz with optimal temperatures.

A possible explanation is that Samsung may release the Exynos variant at a later date and they might introduce the first batch or at least the top-of-the-line Galaxy S22 Ultra with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor instead. Malaysia typically gets the Exynos variant for the Galaxy S series and if the Exynos 2200 is still on the table, we are highly likely to get it.

If Samsung is adamant of releasing the Galaxy S22 with Exynos on it, they could delay the phone launch altogether. After all, they just announced the Galaxy S21 FE few weeks ago which should give them a boost in sales for the first quarter of the year.

The 4nm Exynos 2200 is seen as a game changer for Samsung as they have partnered with AMD for their RDNA 2 technology. Many would anticipate a huge improvement in gaming but it all depends on how Samsung addresses the alleged GPU heat issue. According to Ice Universe, the Exynos 2200 GPU was set to run at a slower 1.29GHz but they are aiming to push it to run at a slightly higher 1.49GHz to “restore some dignity”.

With 3 weeks left to 8th February, Samsung has yet to confirm its upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event. If it aims to release the Galaxy S22 next month, they should be announcing its launch time and date in the next couple of days.
