We are mere weeks away from getting an official launch date for Samsung’s upcoming flagship S series. As revealed through multiple leaks, the upcoming flagship series will come in three models – Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra.
Ever since Samsung started to produce multiple variants of their flagship series, only the highest variant gets all the bells and whistles. In this case, that will be the Ultra variant. In line with that, leaker Xeetechcare claims that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra will come with a couple of “world’s first” features.
Firstly, from previous leaked images, we know that the S22 Ultra will come with an S Pen and a compartment to store it just like the now discontinued Note series. Now, a new leak claims that the S Pen-phone combo might push the writing experience to new heights. Xeetechcare claims that the latency between the S Pen and display is just 2.8 milliseconds! For context, the Note 20 Ultra had a latency of 9ms and the Note 10+ had a latency of 45ms. Based on the assumption, I believe Samsung has achieved this number by turning the dial on their predictive algorithm all the way up to 11.
The Note 20 Ultra’s 9ms latency was already imperceptible to the naked eye, so the S22 Ultra’s S Pen may or may not provide a significant difference in writing experience. But the answer is just a couple of weeks away, we will be sure to test this when we get our hands on the device.
The camera is the next component getting an upgrade as well. The familiar 108 MP Isocell HM3 sensor will now be able to shoot up to 12-bit HDR videos. That is an astonishing 68 billion colours! For reference, Apple’s iPhone Pro models can only shoot, but still impressive, 10-bit HDR videos. The leaker claims that this shooting option will only be available for 4K at 30 fps and FHD at 30 fps, so if you were planning on shooting 8K 12-bit HDR videos, you’re out of luck.
This could be due to the limitations of the processor more than anything, so future versions of the phone might be able to as the processor tech improves.
What we still don’t know yet, is the colour depth of the display. Will the phone come with a 12-bit display so you can playback your 4K 12-bit HDR video in all its glory? If not, you will have to settle for a 10-bit display. Despite that, the display is said to feature a peak brightness of 1750 nits and cover 100% of the DCI-P3 colour gamut for a colour accurate picture. This beautiful display is also rumoured to run Samsung’s brand new One UI 4.1. My guess is that this version will bring with it new S pen specific features. We do not have word on what the new features are, so we’ll have to wait for the official launch.
To keep up with that kind of performance, it’s surely going to need a massive battery and the S22 Ultra comes packing. It is rumoured to carry a 5000 mAh battery capacity and will accept up to 45 watt Super Fast Charging 2.0 power input. The leaker also claims that Samsung will debut a new version of their 45 watt fast charger with the S22 series. We did see a leak of a certified 65 watt charger from Samsung last year, so maybe the S22 Ultra will be upgraded to a Super Fast Charging 3.0?
What we do know based on Samsung’s current practice is that the charger will not be included in the box. The Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the newly launched Galaxy S21 FE are sold without an included charger in Malaysia. On the other hand, Samsung might bundle the new fast charger as a pre order bonus. We will know for sure once Samsung Malaysia opens pre orders for the S22 series.
The only question that remains is the price. Since the S22 Ultra is also a Note, will Samsung take this opportunity the price it higher than the S21 Ultra? To recap, the S21 Ultra had a launch price of RM5,299 for the 256GB storage option and RM5,899 for the 512GB storage option.
Do take all this information with a pinch of salt until the official launch of Samsung’s S22 series, which is rumoured to be on the 8th of February 2021.
