Khairy: Klang Valley to get Mega PPVs to increase COVID-19 booster vaccination from 15 January

To increase the current COVID-19 vaccine booster program in the Klang Valley, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has announced four high-capacity vaccination centres (PPV) will open in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur starting from the 15th of January 2022. Most of the venues are similar to the previous Mega PPVs used during the initial vaccination programme last year.

According to the official statement, the four integrated high-capacity vaccination centres are:

  • PPV World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur
  • PPV Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil
  • PPV IDCC, Shah Alam
  • PPV Soka Gakkai, Klang

Adults who are eligible for their booster shots will receive their vaccination appointment automatically via MySejahtera or SMS, and there’s no need to register again. For those who can’t wait, the public is encouraged to register on the waiting list at participating clinics and off-site vaccination centres under ProtectHealth. Walk-in is no longer permitted for off-site vaccination centres to avoid forming unnecessary crowds and to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.

The COVID-19 booster is currently recommended to ensure optimal levels of protection against COVID-19 as data has shown that protection levels may wane over time. The booster jab is recommended 3 months after being fully vaccinated with Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Sinovac and CanSino Bio vaccines. The default booster is Pfizer but other alternatives are permitted as listed by the Technical Working Group above.

As of 6th January 2022, Malaysia has administered more than 7.3 million boosters which cover 31.4% of the total adult population. In the Klang Valley alone, 42% of adults have received their boosters. Since 3rd January, the booster programme is doing more than 200,000 doses per day and Malaysia has hit a record high of 245,370 booster doses administered yesterday.

Malaysia has fully vaccinated 97.7% of total adults or 78.5% of the total population against COVID-19. According to the COVIDNow dashboard, there are less than 250,000 adults who have not been vaccinated which is 1.1% of the total adult population. Based on data per 100K people according to vaccination status, the risk of COVID-19 infections and deaths are significantly higher among the unvaccinated versus the fully vaccinated as well as the boosted.
