The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has provided an update on the restoration progress of telecommunications infrastructures that were affected by the devastating floods. As of 10am this morning, a total of 752 out of 1,028 infrastructures have been restored which is equivalent to 73% of total affected sites. Restoration works for the remaining 276 sites are still ongoing.

The MCMC has provided a breakdown of the number of affected sites in Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Kelantan, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. At the moment, Pahang has the most affected sites that are not yet operational with a total of 146 sites in the state.

Besides telco towers, a total of 25 Keluarga Malaysia Digital Economy Centres (PEDi), previously known as Community Internet Centres, located in Pahang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan were affected as well. 13 PEDis are now operational while 12 are still in the process of restoration. The MCMC added that there have been no safety incidents reported involving telco infrastructure.

In case you missed it, Telekom Malaysia (TM) has announced that it will be offering free equipment replacement for affected Unifi customers and they are also offering a two-week subscription waiver as well as an extension of credit terms. Digi has also announced that it will be postponing its 3G network shutdown in several states due to the floods. Meanwhile, Celcom has also deployed “Cellular-on-wheels” equipment and provided free Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) at temporary relocation relief centres.
