Huawei P50 Pocket: A Galaxy Z Flip 3 rival with a circular outer display

Everyone knows that, right now at least, if you want a foldable smartphone it’s hard to find any solid option other than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. That’s not to say that their rivals aren’t trying though; we’ve recently seen Oppo reveal their very impressive Oppo Find N foldable that hopes to position itself as a solid alternative to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. But what about the smaller, clamshell foldables? Well, Huawei has recently teased their own flip phone, the Huawei P50 Pocket, and now we’ve gotten more images of just how it’ll look like.

The Huawei P50 Pocket is, by all means, a very peculiar looking device. While specs are still a mystery, Harper’s Bazaar China recently posted on their Weibo a photoshoot with the Huawei P50 Pocket. It has the form factor of the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the P50 Pocket definitely has more of a stylish look to it. And just like Samsung’s flip phone, it has a small outer display next to its rear camera setup. But definitely unlike the Samsung device, the P50 Pocket’s outer display is circular in shape.

It’s somewhat in the same design philosophy as other Huawei devices though. The Huawei P50 and P50 Pro for instance both have a dual ring rear camera, with two circles housing its shooters and flash. It looks as though the Chinese giant has repurposed the lower circle, taking out the camera and instead having the outer display take its place. Of course, you probably won’t want to use it as your main display, but instead it’s likely more for looking at your notifications at a glance, taking a selfie, and checking for the time. It’s also been reported that the P50 Pocket will have a side mounted fingerprint sensor and will come in either silver or gold colourways.

The Huawei P50 Pocket will officially launch on the 23rd of December, 8.30 CET or 3.30pm local time. It isn’t Huawei’s first foldable of course; they have previously launched the China-only Huawei Mate X series. However, those were much more similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, and so I’m certainly pleased to see a contender to the clamshell style Galaxy Z Flip 3. That being said, there’s no word just yet if Huawei is even planning to launch it globally, and even if they do it’ll lack Google Mobile Services and 5G connectivity. Nevertheless, it’s still an exciting time for foldable fans, and more competition in the scene can only be a good thing.
