Digital Nasional Berhad’s 5G network is officially available starting today but with only Telekom Malaysia and YTL Communications on board with their 5G user trial. YTL via Yes is the first to offer 5G services on their postpaid and prepaid plan. TM has yet to reveal its 5G offering but it has mentioned that it will be available to Unifi Mobile postpaid users soon.
In the first phase of the 5G coverage deployment, DNB aims to switch on 500 sites located at Cyberjaya, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur by the end of 2021.
If you’re wondering if your area is covered, DNB has released an interactive map to show its 5G coverage areas. According to the page, the areas marked in green offer an average of 514Mbps on its 5G network. You can also toggle the checkbox to view sites that are still in progress.
Within a few months, DNB has covered most densely populated areas in Kuala Lumpur which include Bangsar, Cheras, Setiawangsa, TTDI, Sentul, Kepong, Wangsa Maju, Bukit Jalil and Sri Petaling. However, the coverage appears to be very spotty in downtown KL including Bukit Bintang and around KLCC. At the moment, Selangor isn’t including the first phase and according to the map, only small patchy areas of Ampang, Selayang, Petaling Jaya are covered with 5G.
Cyberjaya and Putrajaya are also covered in the first phase with some spillover to some areas in Serdang. It’s worth noting that actual real-world 5G performance is subject to location. We are told that the coverage areas are mostly outdoors using the 3.5GHz spectrum, so don’t expect indoor 5G coverage at the moment. For now, Yes is the only telco to offer the 5G service which is available for free until 31st March 2022. However, take note that only selected 5G devices are supported at the moment.
With 500 sites, DNB aims to cover 10% of the population with 5G. By next year, it aims to hit 40% population coverage with coverage being rolled out in Penang, Johor, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Perak. DNB aims to achieve 80% population average by end-2024.
