OnePlus halts OxygenOS 12 update for OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro after users complain of bugs

OnePlus have not had the best of times with their OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. They were infamously caught tweaking processor performance for a better showing in benchmarks, before responding rather callously by stating that users didn’t need that good of a processor anyway. They’ve now found themselves in trouble again though, as their latest Android 12-based OxygenOS 12 update for the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro has been so buggy and messy that OnePlus has decided to pull the update, just days since its original rollout.

Users of the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro who complained about the OxygenOS 12 update generally found loads of bugs and software troubles. These include animation issues, apps needing to tap twice to open, failed calls, random black screens, and even the device itself listing the wrong chipset information, with one bug tracker reporting that some users now had their One Plus 9 Pro show Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 in the About Device page. Other complaints surrounded missing features that were promised as well as some older features having been removed in the OxygenOS 12 update.

However, the complaints didn’t stop at just bugs and missing features. It seems as though many OnePlus fans were also disappointed to see elements of ColosOS seep into their beloved operating system. This was to be expected of course, as following OnePlus’ merge with Oppo, CEO Pete Lau mentioned that they’ll also be merging the codebases for the two operating systems, allowing for faster and more stable software updates for Oppo and OnePlus users. However, judging from their messy rollout of OxygenOS 12, they have a lot more to do before getting it right again.

For the early adopters among you who have updated their device to OxygenOS 12, there’s still hope. There’s been reports that a total factory reset of your OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro should improve your OxygenOS 12 performance. Alternatively, those on the OnePlus forums have also shared ways of performing a rollback for your device to get back the Android 11-based OxygenOS 11, which you can check out here.

As for OnePlus, it’s unfortunately just the latest major OxygenOS update for them that’s been a buggy mess upon release. The OxygenOS 11 update was riddled with issues too for OnePlus 7 series users, and OnePlus would eventually release a hotfix for users that patched up most of the issues. But with the OxygenOS 12 update having been halted altogether, it appears as though they might need just a bit more time before they can re-release their Android 12 update again for users.
