Huawei P50 Pro is coming soon to Malaysia but it won’t support 5G

It has been a year since Huawei launched a new flagship smartphone in Malaysia. With the global chip shortage and ongoing restrictions by the US government, the Huawei P50 series was launched in July and is only available in China. Huawei Malaysia has just dropped a teaser confirming that the P50 Pro is finally coming to our shores very soon.

In its home market, the P50 Pro is available in either Kirin 9000 or Snapdragon 888 versions. According to the Malaysian product page, the Huawei P50 Pro for our local market will be running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chip with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. In terms of colours, it will be offered in either Cocoa Gold or Golden Black.

The P50 Pro features a 6.6″ dual-curved OLED display that pushes 2700×1228 pixels resolution. It has a high 120Hz refresh rate and a 300Hz touch sampling rate. In the camera department, it gets a quad-camera setup featuring a 50MP f/1.8 main camera, a 40MP mono f/1.6 shooter, a 13MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera and a 64MP telephoto camera that supports up to 100x digital zoom (3.5x optical zoom). For selfies, it gets a 13MP front camera that sits in a punch-hole on the screen.

The Huawei P50 series could be the last Huawei smartphone to carry the Leica badge as it has been speculated that the German camera company has ended its collaboration with Huawei. Leica has recently released its own smartphone and it is rumoured that they are working with Xiaomi for their upcoming flagship phone.

In terms of connectivity, the P50 Pro supports 802.11ax WiFi 6 but it lacks 5G which is a huge handicap for a brand new phone 2022. This is due to a limitation imposed by the US government in order for the Chinese tech company to secure chips from Qualcomm. Another obvious omission is the lack of Google Mobile Services (GMS) which means you don’t have seamless access to Google apps and services.

Powering the device is a 4,360mAh battery and it supports 66W Huawei SuperCharge as well as 50W wireless charging. The device also comes with IP68-rated dust and water resistance.

Huawei Malaysia has not revealed the P50 Pro release date but a Huawei representative told Android Authority back in October that the device will be released globally in 2022. In China, the P50 Pro with a Snapdragon 888 processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage is priced at CNY 5,988 which is about RM3,984.
