Huawei to release its first smartwatch that can monitor your blood pressure

Before the year is out, Huawei appears to be launching its first smartwatch that can measure your blood pressure directly on your wrist. The new wearable is expected to be called the Huawei Watch D and it could launch sometime in December.

The “Huawei Watch D” name was spotted on the European Union Intellectual Property Office back in September and the description read “use in medical analysis; heart rate monitoring apparatus; arterial blood pressure measuring apparatus; blood pressure monitors.”

A leakster on Weibo has revealed a purported image of the Huawei Watch D. Although it carries the “Watch” name, the wearable looks more like a fitness band similar to the Huawei Band 6. As shown in the image, the device has a colour display and two physical buttons marked “home” and “health” on the right.

There isn’t much info about the specs but the leakster claims that the product is in its final stages of testing and the accuracy is said to be good. It is said that the Huawei Watch D has already received certification as a Class II medical device in China.

Typically, advanced health monitoring features such as ECG and blood pressure monitoring would require regulatory approval for each country. In Malaysia, the Apple Watch seems to be the only smartwatch that has been approved by the Medical Device Authority (MDA) to offer ECG. Selected new Fitbit devices also offer ECG but you can’t use it in Malaysia. Besides Huawei, the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 also supports ECG and blood pressure monitoring, however, it isn’t available in Malaysia just yet.
