Samsung is ditching the headphone jack on its new mid-range phones

Since the release of the iPhone 7, most smartphone makers including Samsung have started to remove the trusty headphone jack as the industry transitions towards wireless earbuds. For the longest time, the omission of the headphone jack is typically found on flagship devices while more affordable mid-range and entry-level options still retain the 3.5mm port. Now it appears that Samsung is also getting rid of the headphone jack for its 2022 Galaxy A series which could be bad news for those who still prefer to plug-in their wired headphones.

Serial leakster @Onleaks has shared high-quality renders of the upcoming Galaxy A33 5G and A53 5G via digit.in and 91Mobiles. While they look similar to the current A32 and A52, you’ll noticed that the devices only get a USB-C port and there’s no headphone jack at the bottom.

The Samsung Galaxy A33 5G is the successor to the current Samsung Galaxy A32 5G and is expected to come with a 6.4” AMOLED display with a full HD resolution. This is quite a notable upgrade as the current Galaxy A32 5G has a lower resolution 6.5” TFT HD+ display, while the 4G version gets a better 6.4” AMOLED Full HD panel. The A33 5G still gets a quad-camera setup on a slightly raised camera bump on its plastic back.

The Galaxy A53 5G also retains a similar design as the current A52 5G and as shown above, it is also missing the 3.5mm headphone jack. In terms of display, it is said to retain the same 6.5” 120Hz AMOLED display as the current A52. With more countries turning on their 5G networks, Samsung is expected to drop the 4G version and will only release a single 5G variant.

It is worth pointing out that the move to get rid of the 3.5mm headphone jack for mid-range devices has already started in Malaysia. The recently introduced Samsung Galaxy M52 5G priced at RM1,699 no longer comes with the headphone jack but at least it still offers microSD card storage expansion. In addition, the current Galaxy A52 and A72 were also shipped without wired headphones included in the box which is seen as a step by Samsung to encourage its users to pick up a pair of Galaxy Buds wireless earbuds. For those who still need a 3.5mm jack, you could still plug in a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle which is likely to be sold separately.

With a variety of affordable wireless earbuds in the market, are you still using wired headphones? Let us know in the comments below.
