Wabetainfo reported that WhatsApp is rolling out an improvement update that lets users get a new interface to watch videos from Instagram, YouTube, and other sites within the app. The update just released for beta iOS users after it was first rolled out to beta Android users.
The new interface includes a control bar, which lets you move the picture-in-picture (PiP) view easier. It also implements some shortcuts, like being able to show the video you’re watching in full-screen mode.
The new feature also includes immediately showing a YouTube video in full-screen mode after opting to play it through WhatsApp. However, this specific update has only reportedly rolled out to specific beta users.
Currently, users can enjoy PiP on WhatsApp by pressing the blurred thumbnail when users send a link to a video. But there isn’t a full control bar with more shortcuts. You are able to move the PiP around the app, but the lack of a control bar would make it easier to accidentally press pause or play the video you’re watching.
The beta version of this feature doesn’t mean that it will ever launch with the main version of the app. While the control bar is pretty useful, it looks like the design needs some work—as it doesn’t look as nice or as clean as I expected.
WhatsApp’s parent company has also recently changed its name from Facebook to Meta. According to Mark Zuckerberg, he says that the move will “put people at the center of their technology, and better reflect who they are”.
