WhatsApp will let you transfer chats from iPhone to Android phones, not just for Samsung

Google has announced that WhatsApp‘s chat history migration feature will be available for Android phones that launch with Android 12. The feature to transfer chats from iPhone to Android was previously only available for Samsung phones.

“We worked closely with the WhatsApp team to build a new set of capabilities, all designed to make it easier to switch from iPhone to Android and take your WhatsApp history with you,” wrote Google.

Earlier this month, Google released Android 12—which is already rolling out on Pixel 3 and above and features a more personalised user interface, new privacy features, and more. Android 12 will be coming to Samsung Galaxy, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, Xiaomi devices, and more later this year. This means that the WhatsApp update will only be available for Android phones once they have been updated.

With the Android 12 release, Google also added the ability to transfer the rest of your essentials from your iPhone to your new Android phone using a USB-C to Lightning cable. With your permission, Android “automatically matches and installs the same apps from Google Play”. They will also let you bring in photos, videos, contacts, calendars, and more.

Once you’ve connected your phones, you’ll be prompted to scan a QR code on your iPhone to launch WhatsApp and move all your essentials over to your new Android device. But if you have trouble scanning, just open WhatsApp, go to Settings, Chats, and then select Move Chats to Android.

Previously, only Samsung phones were able to do this. The feature first rolled out to Android users with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Z Flip 3
