Back in September, the official Samsung Mobile US account tweeted out a jab at Apple for still having a notch on the iPhone 13 lineup following Cupertino’s launch event. This tweet also referenced Samsung’s own Galaxy Z Fold 3, perhaps because the foldable utilises an under-display camera, thus nullifying the need for a notch or punch hole cutout.
Samsung might be wishing they could take that back though, as if the latest leaks are accurate, it looks as though they’ll be using a notch of their own on the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. This tablet is set to be the highest end tablet in their offering, and serial leaker OnLeaks has worked with 91Mobiles to produce the following renders of the tablet:
As you can see, the supposed Tab S8 Ultra has a little notch on the right of the device when looked at vertically. The rest of the device has some seemingly thin bezels, with the alleged 14.6-inch display already much bigger than the 11-inch and 12.4-inch screens that the Galaxy Tab S8 and Tab S8+ are purportedly sporting. You’ll also notice that the rear of the device has a dual-camera setup, while below that is a magnetic strip for users to attach an S Pen on. Other features that can be seen from the renders includes what appears to be quad speakers as well as a Type-C port.
There are some things missing though like a 3.5mm audio jack and no magnetic connectors on the side of the frame. While it’s likely that the former won’t be on the final product, it seems as though the renders are not exactly 100% complete just yet, hence the missing magnetic connectors.
Prior to this, OnLeaks had already shown us renders of the base model Galaxy Tab S8. From those earlier designs, it seems that the design philosophy is mostly the same, with a similar camera bump and magnetic strip on the rear for both the Galaxy Tab S8 and the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. Other than the smaller screen real estate though, the bezels on the Tab S8 are noticeably thicker instead of having a notch.
Of course, it goes without saying that these all remain rumours and leaks for now, and that nothing has been made official by Samsung. It has been over a year now though since we saw the release of the Galaxy Tab S7, which means we should be seeing a new flagship tablet from Samsung anytime soon now. Until then though, you should perhaps take the notched display with a pinch of salt.
