Facebook is planning to change its name. Here’s what it could be changed into

Facebook will soon change the name of its company to something completely different, as reported by The Verge. The rebrand is likely to separate the company from its many products under the same parent company—including the Facebook app itself, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus.

According to The Verge, the news came from “a source with direct knowledge of the matter”, and that Mark Zuckerberg is planning to talk about the name change at the company’s annual Connect conference on 28 October. While Zuckerberg hasn’t confirmed the name change plans, he did say that he plans to “effectively transition” the company from being a social media company to being “a metaverse company” in July.

“(The metaverse) going to be a big focus, and I think that this is just going to be a big part of the next chapter for the way that the internet evolves after the mobile internet. And I think it’s going to be the next big chapter for our company too, really doubling down in this area,” said Zuckerberg.

So what are the possible names that Facebook will be switching to for their company name? Well, there’s a possibility that it could be changed to Horizon, as it was the name of an unreleased VR version of Facebook that the company has been developing for the Oculus. The app was recently tweaked to Horizon Worlds after Facebook demoed Horizon Workrooms—VR for the workplace.

The news of Facebook changing its name has also spread on Twitter, and there’s even a hilarious tweet thread asking for “wrong answer” suggestions for the rebrand. One Twitter user suggested, “The Facebook“—which was what the social media site was called when it was launched in 2004.

Facebook isn’t the tech conglomerate to make this move. In 2015, Google reorganized entirely under a holding company called Alphabet—which separates their search engine from the company itself. Snapchat also rebranded to Snap Inc. in 2016—and started calling itself a “camera company”, debuting its first pair of Spectacles camera glasses as well.
