Wished your Galaxy smartphone has more RAM for better multitasking? Samsung actually has a feature called RAM Plus and it appears that they are rolling it out to more devices from mid-range to flagship models.
The feature was first spotted on the Galaxy A52s 5G which adds an extra 4GB of RAM. This is achieved by converting onboard storage into virtual memory. This Android memory paging feature isn’t exactly new and other smartphone makers including Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi offer it as well.
As reported by Sammobile, the RAM Plus feature was recently introduced for the Galaxy A52 5G through a software update. The feature is also included on the latest Galaxy Z Fold 3 which expands its RAM from 12GB to 16GB.
Unlike other smartphone makers, it appears that users don’t get to choose the size of the virtual RAM and you’re stuck with 4GB RAM extra. To find out if RAM Plus is running on your Galaxy device, you can check by going into your phone’s Settings > Battery and Device Care > Memory.
Having extra virtual RAM may not necessarily provide extra performance for gaming but it may potentially prevent more apps from getting killed in the background. It all depends on how the feature is optimised by the respective manufacturers.
Sammobile added that the latest One UI 4.0 beta based on Android 12 doesn’t seem to show RAM Plus for the Galaxy S21 but it could be added through a future update.
