Apple Wallet lets you add COVID-19 vaccination cards in iOS 15.1

iOS 15 has recently been released, with tons of new features. One of the new features include helping to store your COVID-19 immunisations and test results in the Health app, but Apple will also be allowing you to add your vaccination cards to the Wallet app in their next iOS 15.1 update.

“…in an upcoming software update, they can also choose to add verifiable COVID-19 vaccination records as a vaccination card in Apple Wallet to present to businesses, venues, and more,” wrote Apple.

Although they didn’t exactly state that the update will appear in iOS 15.1, MacRumors was first to confirm the news because of the iOS 15.1 beta update. After users upload their COVID-19 vaccination status to the Health app, they can then generate a vaccination card in Apple Wallet—but only after the new update.

According to Apple, SMART Health Cards specification will be used to power this feature—for U.S. users based on their state. Users can obtain them from an organisation that has their clinical information. The printed or digital record can be kept as a record of a user’s vaccination history and/or test results.

For U.S. states that don’t support SMART Health Cards, users should be able to look up their information in their state databases. But for those who were vaccinated through private companies like Walmart and CVS will also be able to add their information to Apple’s Health and Wallet apps because it’s the same system.

U.K. users who are using the NHS-based app are also able to add their vaccination records to the Wallet app. As for the other countries, there could possibly be a “universal standard” solution that could work for all healthcare providers/states that implement it.

This could mean that once we’re allowed to travel again, we could store a “universally-accepted” digital vaccination card in the Apple Wallet app—rather than show our local MySejahtera app that could be difficult to verify outside of Malaysia. It could also give us Malaysians an actual reason to use the Wallet app, as local Apple Pay support isn’t available yet.
