Instagram: Native iPad app would be “nice to do” but it isn’t a priority

If you have an iPad, you might have noticed that there isn’t a native Instagram app for the Apple tablet. Instagram head Adam Mosseri responded to the question “Where’s the Instagram iPad app?” by saying that although it is “nice to do”, the plans for it “hasn’t made the cut”.

“I spent a bit of a time on an iPad because I was on a flight, but still no iPad app for Instagram. It would be nice to do, but there’s a lot to do and only so many people, so it hasn’t made the cut,” said Mosseri.

Previously in 2020, Mosseri has already said something pretty similar. He explained that while they would “like to build an iPad app”, it hasn’t “bubbled up as the next best thing to do yet”. The similar response is repeated recently despite the obvious demand for it.

Although there isn’t an Instagram app especially for the iPad, you’re still able to download the iOS version for the tablet. You can look through and interact with posts and Stories in your feed like normal. However, you aren’t able to post through the iPad.

In June, Instagram introduced the feature that lets you post photos on your desktop, too—which is something that a lot of users have also been wanting. A spokesperson explained that the introduction to the feature was due to knowing that “many people access Instagram from their computer”.

The iPad is also able to access iPad-friendly camera apps like Hyperlapse and Boomerang—which are both Instagram apps. Posts made by these apps can normally be shared seamlessly over Instagram and Facebook or saved on the camera roll to be shared with any platform—but it’s a different story for iPad users.

But in all honesty, Instagram is still something iPad users would use, despite the lack of ability to post any pictures. Mosseri even made it clear that the platform is “no longer a photo-sharing app“—so users can still do things like interact to other posts, watch videos and shop.
