Rumour has it, Game Boy games might be added to Nintendo Switch Online

There are several sources that have reported on rumours of how some Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles might be showing up on Nintendo Switch Online. While Nintendo hasn’t yet confirmed any of these rumours, here’s why many of these sources are convinced that it could be a real thing soon.

Known insider NateDrake revealed in his podcast that Nintendo might be adding Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles “in the coming weeks”. The rumours are based on a datamine in 2019 which showed four emulators inside Nintendo’s NES app—which “could mean there will be two new Classic consoles and/or three new consoles for Switch Online”.

Both Nate and his co-host believe that one of the emulator types is likely for “Game Boy and Game Boy Color” titles. Separately, Eurogamer has also been able to separately corroborate these reports, and added that “other retro platforms are also on the cards”.

“This month is the third anniversary of the Nintendo Switch Online service, which originally launched in September 2018 offering a selection of NES titles. SNES games began trickling out from September 2019,” wrote Tom Phillips of Eurogamer.

The rumours might not really have super strong bases, but it all sort of makes sense in what Nintendo would likely offer next. There’s no word on which titles might arrive, but they might not start with the most popular titles at first. Nintendo introduced some pretty obscure NES and SNES titles for Switch Online—but they eventually introduced some fan favourites like some Zelda titles.

There’s also a possibility that the 3DS and Wii U eShops may not last for long. Nintendo Japan announced that starting 2022 it will no longer allow 3DS and Wii U users to add funds via credit card or e-money. If players will no longer have a way to purchase and play Game Boy games, adding Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to Switch Online makes perfect sense.
