BMW iX xDrive40 Malaysia: 5 tech features you need to know about this fully electric SUV

BMW Group Malaysia recently revealed the BMW iX xDrive40 which is also available in an xDrive40 Sport model as well. This new fully electric SUV will get you 425km of range, a power output of 322hp, and 630Nm of torque. The pure electric SUV can go from 0 to 100km/h in just 6.1 seconds and has a top speed of 200km/h.

To highlight some more features about this vehicle, we’re going to go through five features you would get with an iX xDrive40.

Fast charging

Running on a 76.6kWh lithium-ion battery, the iX xDrive40 supports both AC and DC charging. With AC charging, you can expect up to 11kW of fast charging, taking seven hours and 15 minutes to get a full charge.

With DC 150kW rapid charging, you can expect to go from 10-80% in only 31 minutes. You can get 100km of range with a quick 8-minute charge at a high-power charging station.

As part of an online exclusive offer, the first 50 units that are pre-booked will get complimentary charging installation and one-year public charging access.

Live Cockpit Professional system

In the interior, the vehicle has a Live Cockpit Professional system running the new BMW Operating System 8. As the peripherals, the SUV has a 12.3-inch cluster display and a large 14.9-inch touchscreen display in the center.

BMW Operating System 8 comes with an upgraded voice assistant, 5G connectivity, and will support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

BMW Laserlight

Although not included in the base version, the BMW iX xDrive40 Sport comes with BMW Laserlight headlamps. This new technology transforms a laser into a useful headlamp by putting it through various mirrors and lenses. Compared to an LED, the Laserlight is ten times brighter and 30% more efficient.

Not only will this make the road more visible in low-light conditions, but the camera Selective Beam system will also automatically dim to prevent blinding oncoming vehicles, leading to a safer drive.

18-speaker sound system

BMW did not take the sound aspect of this car lightly. The Sport model has an 18-speaker Harman Kardon sound system installed, while the base model features a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system.

The iX vehicles will also feature BMW IconicSounds Electric, co-created with Academy Awards winning composer Hans Zimmer. This will deliver an emotional and immersive soundscape while you drive, with the sound reacting to the actions of the driver and the engine.

Driving Assistant Professional

To assist the driver, the BMW iX xDrive40 Sport offers a multitude of features that use input sensors like the surround-view camera to make driving easier.

Parking Assistant Plus will use the camera to display the surroundings during parking, while the Driving Assistant Professional package will give you adaptive cruise control, lane control assist, speed limit assist, and evasion avoidance.

Pricing and availability

The base model is currently available for pre-booking with a price of RM419,630 (with a two-year warranty) and the Sport will be RM472,630 (with a two-year warranty). For greater peace of mind, you’ll need to top up RM16,170 for the extended warranty and service package which gives you a 5-years unlimited mileage warranty.

BMW Malaysia is also offering the optional RM4,600 Power Package which consists of BMW i Wallbox and BMW i Public Charging Cable.

Interestingly, the provided pricing is without the 50% SST exemption for Completely Built Unit (CBU) vehicles which is currently extended until 31st December 2021.

To compare, the locally-assembled 2020 X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid with the SST tax exemption is currently going for RM418,813.85 or RM439,443.85 with an extended warranty.

For a premium electric SUV, the BMW iX xDrive40 seems to be quite an appealing alternative to the X5 for what it is offering. With BMW Group Financial Services Malaysia’s Balloon Financing Plan, the iX xDrive 40 can be yours from RM4,888 per month based on an estimated 80% loan on a 5-year tenure.

The BMW iX xDrive40 is now available for pre-booking. You can do so at the BMW website.
