Last week, Apple surprised us all by debuting the MagSafe Battery Pack, a wireless powerbank that attaches to your iPhone through MagSafe. But in classic Apple fashion, they also didn’t reveal too much details when it came to the hardware specs. A new teardown video by YouTube channel Charger Lab though reveals the inner workings of the new Battery Pack, including its two-cell design.
Now the MagSafe Battery Pack is far from a fast charging power bank. When not plugged into a wall socket, it only charges your iPhone at a measly 5W, increasing to 15W once connected to a 20W or higher wall charger. One possible reason for the low charging rate is that its maximum battery capacity is just 1,460mAh at 7.62V, as shown in the teardown video. Charger Lab does note though that if you calculate battery capacity based on 5V, battery capacity is roughly 2,220mAh. The two batteries are also run in series, allowing it to reach a total energy of 11.13Wh.
Furthermore, Charger Lab’s teardown shows a two separate coils in the outer casing of the MagSafe Battery Pack. The inner coil is used to detect the distance between the battery pack and your iPhone, while the outer coil is an NFC detection coil attached to an NFC chip. The main chassis of the battery pack meanwhile has 16 small magnets attached. The actual charging coil can also be found here on the circuit board along with the necessary integrated circuits and power supply.
You can watch Charger Lab’s full teardown for more details on the specific components found in the MagSafe Battery Pack. As for getting your hands on one though, you’ll have to wait a bit longer. Apple Malaysia’s website still shows the product as unavailable with the option to add to bag greyed out.
