JKJAV: AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines are now suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers

The special committee on ensuring access to COVID-19 vaccine (JKJAV) has updated its vaccination guidelines for both pregnant and lactating mothers. According to its latest advisory dated 25th June 2021, AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines can now be used for pregnant mothers between 14-33 weeks as well as breastfeeding mothers.

Mothers who are pregnant beyond 33 weeks may be able to get vaccinated after consultation with a doctor. Mothers are urged to consult a doctor if there are any concerns.

Prior to this, only Pfizer vaccine is recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. AstraZeneca and Sinovac were previously not recommended as there was limited safety data for both pregnant and lactating mothers. To ensure that expectant mothers are given the right vaccines, MySejahtera had introduced a feature to allow women to declare if they are pregnant and breastfeeding.

Since all three vaccines that are currently administered under the National Immunisation Programme have been given the green light, it is now possible for pregnant mothers to get an appointment for AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines.
