Why is Xiaomi releasing another Redmi Note 8 in 2021?

The Redmi Note 8 was first launched in 2019, and it proved to be a solid option for those looking for performance on a tight budget. Over 25 million units of the device have been sold since its launch around the world, and now, to commemorate that milestone, Xiaomi has announced that a Redmi Note 8 2021 will be launched soon—with some upgraded specs.

The company has shared a couple of teasers on its official Twitter page, and this includes confirmation of a couple of main specs—including a 48MP main camera (which will sit within a quad-camera setup), a 6.3″ display with a dot drop display, and a new MediaTek Helio G85 processor. This will replace the Snapdragon 665 on the 2019 edition—a choice which may or may not please everyone.

Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed an exact date just yet, but it seems likely that we’ll see a global launch “soon”.

Not much else is known in terms of specs, but the Redmi Note 8 2021 doesn’t appear to be very different from the 2019 edition. The images on Xiaomi’s teasers also look nearly identical to the original Note 8, so it’s a little hard to understand the thinking behind Xiaomi’s new choice here.

Other expected specs include a full HD resolution display, as well as an ultra-wide shooter, mated to a macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. In any case, we’ll probably hear something really soon from Xiaomi/Redmi—and the big question I really have here is: do we need another Redmi Note 8, especially when we already have a very, very good Redmi Note 10 series?
