COVID-19: New cases jump to 1,854 today, 555 recorded in Sarawak

Malaysia has recorded 1,854 new COVID-19 cases today which brings the total number of infections to 357,607. This is the highest number of new daily cases recorded since 6th March 2021. There are 5 new deaths reported and the death toll is now 1,313.

The Ministry of Health has reported 1,247 new recoveries and a total of 341,489 patients have recovered and discharged so far. The recovery rate has dipped slightly to 95.49% while the mortality rate is now 0.37%.

There are currently 14,805 active cases remaining which are receiving treatment. 169 are in ICU while 79 require respiratory support.

Out of the 1,854 new cases today, 20 are imported while 1,834 are transmitted locally. Sarawak recorded the most with 555 new cases, followed by Selangor with 403 cases, Pulau Pinang with 176 cases and Kelantan with 143 cases.

In Sarawak, 417 cases (75.1%) reported today were detected from existing clusters and through active contact tracing within the community including long houses. According to the Health Director-General Dr Noor Hisham, the main contributor to the rise of new cases in Sarawak are social activities and large gatherings which include funerals, weddings and other events.

The Ministry of Health has identified 7 new clusters and 4 are workplace related. Below is the list of newly identified clusters.

A total of 67 clusters have recorded new cases. the Persiaran Freesia construction site cluster recorded the most with 63 cases, followed by Sungai Gemuan cluster with 26 cases and Jalan Harapan prison cluster with 25 cases.
