Every year, the latest generation of iPhones are launched towards the end of the year; the iPhone 11 series during September, and the current iPhone 12 range launching in October 2020. We’re still some way off a release for the upcoming iPhone 13 series, but a number of leaked images have now given us an idea on what Apple is planning for their next smartphone.
The images can be viewed courtesy of supply chain blog Macotakara. According to the post (translated), the images depict a 3D-printed dummy unit—“probably” the iPhone 13 Pro, thanks to the triple-camera rear setup and the 6.1″ display. Before we go any further, have a look at the images:
On the back of the dummy unit, everything looks identical to the iPhone 12 Pro, but it’s up front where changes look more likely. According to Macotakara, the notch is now slightly narrower compared to the iPhone 12 Pro’s (26.8mm versus 34.83mm), although the 13 Pro’s notch might be marginally taller (5.35mm versus 5.3mm). This change isn’t explained, but the smaller footprint might be because Apple is moving the earpiece speaker higher up the notch.
The iPhone 12 series, of course, uses the same notch that first debuted on the iPhone X, so it does make a degree of sense that Apple is tweaking its design a tad. It is slightly odd that the Cupertino-based company is continuing to persist with the notch, with everyone else now using a hole-punch cutout—which is arguably a better way to optimise screen real estate.
Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly considering moving the selfie shooter on the iPhone 13 Pro from the right to the left of the notch. Again, no explanation has been provided (this is leaked information, after all), but perhaps this might have something to do with new sensors, or at least, an internal rearrangement of sorts.
That aside, there isn’t much we can learn from the images. However, you should note that these are the sort of leaked renders that tend to leak across the supply chain ahead of an official release, with parties like case and accessory makers usually using the info to prepare their own products. In any case, it seems that the iPhone 13 might look very similar to the iPhone 12, although you will, of course, see renewed internals (and possibly stuff like Touch ID).
