If you thought that robots running a warehouse was only something you saw on YouTube or in a science fiction film, that reality is about to be shattered. That’s because Malaysia’s largest home improvement retailer, MR.DIY has just launched their robotic e-commerce warehouse!
In anticipation of the online shopping trend and the adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0) technologies, MR.DIY had already started the design and build of this warehouse in 2019.
And it’s exactly “as seen on TV” to use the phrase a little loosely. MR.DIY’s brand new 65,000 sqft warehouse in Seri Kembangan, Selangor is employing programmable robots to help boost e-commerce efficiency.
The warehouse enables the retailer to process online orders at triple the previous rate from manual to automated, resulting in a 200% increase in operational efficiency!
In case you haven’t seen one of these robots before, they basically look like enormous robot vacuum cleaners! With this new system, MR.DIY can increase the capacity of their product selections to more than 20,000 varieties improving customers’ shopping experience.
When in the warehouse, these robots will help with the transporting of products from storage to the sorting area where the employees will do the picking process and transfer the items to pack and get them ready for delivery.
To do this, the robots have special shelves that they will drive under, before lifting them up and ferrying these shelves full of products to where they will be sorted.
This saves the workers time that would otherwise be spent scouring these massive warehouses for products. What’s more, since each product will be meticulously labelled, it can also reduce the possibility of human error
That’s not all, MR.DIY’s robotic e-commerce warehouse also opens up the opportunity to upskill their warehouse employees in robotics and automation, providing more opportunity for career advancement.
All in, it is about driving growth, delivering value and growing talent!
