State-linked SEDC Energy x JomCharge have just revised their EV charger pricing in Sarawak with price reduction as much as 50%.

Its recent deployment at Betong along the Pan Borneo Highway was seen as the most expensive highway DC Charger in the country. This comes as a surprise considering Sarawak has the cheapest and greenest electricity tariff in Malaysia, with over 60% of power generated coming from hydropower plants.

Not only the Betong EV charging location pushes a rather slow 30kW, the charger itself was originally priced at RM1.60 per minute. That calculates to an effective rate of RM3.20 per kWh, without power splitting or dynamic power sharing.

Recently, SEDC Energy x JomCharge have updated the pricing for its 30kW DC Charger at RNR Mid Layar Betong location from RM1.60 per minute to RM0.80 per minute.

With the new rate, 30 minutes of charging would cost you RM24 for approximately 15kWh. This calculates to RM1.60 per kWh.

Meanwhile, its 200kW DC Charger at Petros MFS Batu Kawa has also gotten a price revision as well. Previously priced at RM3.20 per minute, the high-powered DC charger is now slashed to a more reasonable rate of RM1.40 per minute.

Assuming your EV can receive the maximum 200kW for 10 minutes, the charging session would cost you RM14 for 33.3kWh, or equivalent to RM0.42 per kWh. However, if your EV can consistently get 80kW for 20 minutes, that’s RM28 for 26.7kWh, that’s equivalent to RM1.05 per kWh.

Interestingly, SEDC Energy x JomCharge’s 60kW DC Charger at Petros MFS Hana is priced higher at RM1.60 per minute. A 30 minute session would cost you RM48 for 30kWh, which is equivalent to RM1.60 per kWh.

At the moment, majority of Charge Point Operators in Sarawak are using time-based pricing for their EV chargers. The only EV chargers with kWh-based pricing in the state are from Sarawak Energy Berhad x Gentari, where they currently charge RM1.40 per kWh.
