The next Galaxy Z Fold isn’t expected anytime soon, with the original Galaxy Fold launching in September 2019, followed by the much-improved Galaxy Z Fold 2 in September of last year. As such, we should have approximately half a year before a next flagship foldable is announced—but that hasn’t stopped a couple of leaks from revealing some unofficial details (way) ahead of a launch.
According to a new report from Naver Blog (translated from Korean), Samsung has working on a couple of upgrades for its top-end foldable phone series, starting with efforts to slim down the profile of the current Galaxy Z Fold 2. Samsung is purportedly looking to use “integrated polariser technology” to reduce the thickness for the upcoming foldable, while the hinge is also supposed to be improved to improve the weight and thickness of the Z Fold 2.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 will also be significantly lighter than its predecessor, if the predictions are to be believed. Tron predicts a weight of around 250g, and compared to the 282g-heavy Galaxy Z Fold 2, this would be a significantly lighter phone—although it’s still heavy compared to conventional smartphones, of course. This might also be the first foldable that Samsung equips with water resistance, and the long-rumoured UDC (under-display camera) might also finally debut on the Z Fold 3.
Meanwhile, an image was also attached to the leakster’s Tweet, one that suggest the existence of a Pro model within the next Z Fold series:
It isn’t clear if the leaked specs pertain to the vanilla or Pro versions of the Z Fold 3, but it’s worth noting that Samsung does not usually separate the numerical figure and the rest of the model’s name. For example, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is usually spelt as “Galaxy Z Fold2” on official Samsung pages, so perhaps this might be indicative of the image’s veracity.
Regardless, a Pro model would certainly be an interesting proposition. Personally, the biggest question I have is price, with the standard Galaxy Z Fold 2 already retailing for an eyewatering RM7,999 price tag. How much more would a Z Fold 3 Pro cost? And is a Pro model really necessary?
