The upcoming OnePlus 9 series is launching in the coming weeks and they have just confirmed its collaboration with Hasselblad to step up its photography game. The OnePlus 9 flagship series of smartphones will launch on the 23rd March 2021 at 10:00pm Malaysian time.

The upcoming OnePlus 9 Pro is expected to feature a new Hasselblad camera system which could rival Huawei’s partnership with Leica. According to the smartphone maker, they have committed to to invest USD 150 million in the next 3 years to enhance its imaging capabilities with the Swedish camera brand. This should translate to significant improvements in both photography and videography for upcoming flagship device.

According to the announcement, both companies will work closely on various camera improvements. At the moment, they are working on software optimisation which include colour tuning and sensor calibration. The OnePlus 9 series will feature a new colour solution called “Natural Colour Calibration with Hasselblad” which promises to offer a more perceptually accurate and natural-looking colours for photos taken on the device. This would set a new standard for future OnePlus smartphones.

In addition, the OnePlus 9 series will also feature a new HasselBlad Pro Mode that claims to offer class-leading sensor calibration to a smartphone for the first time. According to OnePlus, this would offer incredibly accurate and natural colours for a solid foundation for post-editing. When switched on, the mode will offer an authentic Hasselblad look and feel based on Hasselblad’s image processing software. Professional photographers will be given more control to make further adjustments including ISO, focus, exposure times, white balance and more. The mode will also allow users to capture 12-bit RAW format for richer colours and higher dynamic range.

In terms of hardware, the OnePlus 9 series will feature a custom Sony IMX789 sensor which is said to be the largest and most advanced sensor on a OnePlus device. The camera system will also feature a panoramic camera with 14-degree field of view, T-lens technology for lightning-fast focus for the front camera. The device also offers HDR recording and support for 8K in 30fps or 4K in 120fps.

In terms of the actual phone specs, the OnePlus 9 Pro is expected to come with a 6.78″ Quad HD+ 120Hz display and it would run on a Snapdragon 888. Apart from the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, the smartphone maker could also introduce a cheaper option that’s called the OnePlus 9R.
