Leak suggests that the Sony WF-1000XM4 might look very different from its predecessor

One of my favourite headphones has to be the Sony WF-1000XM3. They feature some of the best noise cancellation I’ve used on in-ear headphones, and in general, they sound very, very good. But when is a successor coming? Launched back in 2019—almost two years ago—there hasn’t been any official word on the WF-1000XM4 from the company, despite the launch of its bigger brother, the Sony WH-1000XM4.

Now, however, we might just have some news on a successor. As first spotted by The Walkman Blog, a user on Reddit (u/Key_Attention4766) shared a pair of images that give us an idea on how the WF-1000XM4 will look. Granted, the images are pretty pixelated and blurry as a whole, and the photos only show (part of ) the box, instead of the earbuds themselves. Still, you get a semi-decent look at what could be Sony’s next in-ear headphones.

Have a look at both photos—one that shows the front of the box, and another that reveals the battery life of the Sony WF-1000XM4:

It must be noted that there hasn’t been any verification of any sort from Sony (or anyone else with authority), and the whole thing might just be a hoax. Some of the other commenters in the Reddit thread raised suspicions on the validity of the account, which was a throwaway account.

Also, the image is a little too pixelated to tell for sure, but the branding and lettering of the branding on the headphones look a little off, and the headphones look a little more compact compared to the XM3. In fact, the earbuds in the picture also looks similar to Sony’s more affordable WF-XB700, which ofer sweat resistance and “Extra Bass”. Frankly speaking, I’m a little surprised. Sony released the WH-1000XM4 with near-identical looks to the WH-1000XM3, and I was expecting to see the same move for the earbuds series as well.

Meanwhile, there also appears to be support for wireless Hi-Res audio, which is expected, and battery life is estimated to be up to 24 hours (six hours on the earbuds, with 3x charges in the case). This would be identical figures to its predecessor, although there isn’t any information on which settings are used for these calculations.

So, what do you think? Do you fancy the purported new design? Let us know in the comments section below.
