The Vaio Z is the world’s first laptop with a “3D moulded full carbon fibre body”

Vaio Corporation has introduced its latest flagship laptop, the Vaio Z. The Japan-based company alleges the Vaio Z is the world’s first laptop to sport a “3D moulded full carbon fibre body”. This means each carbon fibre piece is moulded around all sides on the lid, the palm rest and base assembly.

The notebook maker said this was made possible thanks to a new production technique that Vaio co-developed with Toray, a carbon fibre specialist. The Vaio Z’s carbon fibre body is touted to be durable and lightweight. It even said to be able to survive a 127cm drop. It’s worth noting that this is higher than the MIL Standard Quality Test requirement which is a 122cm drop.

According to the release from Vaio, the Vaio Z weighs 1.06kg and measures 12.2mm at its slimmest point. The notebook also flaunts a 14” display that outputs at 4K resolution (3840 x 2160 pixels) and offers a 16:9 aspect ratio. It is supplemented by a backlit keyboard that features a 1.5mm travel distance as well as a touchpad that supports multi-touch.

Under the hood, the comes powered by an 11th gen Intel Core i7-11375H processor mated with up to 32GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to 2TB PCIe NVMe SSD for storage. For casual gaming or multimedia work, the Vaio Z comes with Intel Iris Xe. It runs on Windows 10 Pro out of the box and has Dolby Audio tuned stereo speakers.

In terms of ports, you get two USB Type C ports that support Thunderbolt 4, one 3.5mm headphone jack and one HDMI port.

Furthermore, it supports Bluetooth 5.1 and WiFi 6 connectivity, which is said to be 20% quicker than the current WiFi 5 standard. The thin-and-light notebook powered by a 53WHr battery that is rated to last over 10 hours on a single charge.

Other features include a 2MP webcam that supports Windows Hello facial recognition technology to sign-in without entering a password. Besides that, the notebook also comes with a fingerprint reader as second way to quickly sign-in to Windows.

In case you didn’t know, the Vaio brand previously belonged to Sony before it was separated and was sold to the investment firm Japan Industrial Partners in February 2014. This was done as part of Sony’s restructuring effort to focus on mobile devices at the time. Following that, the brand returned to Malaysia in 2018 via their distributor Nexstgo.

There is currently no word on the official price of the Vaio Z or when it will be available in Malaysia. A quick check on the Vaio official website in Malaysia shows the Vaio Z prominently featured on the front page and there is a product page similar to the one listed on Vaio’s Hong Kong site. However, the Vaio Z is still not listed on the Vaio’s local estore.
