Before the Galaxy S21 is unveiled tomorrow, Samsung has launched its new Exynos 2100 chip which will power its next generation flagship smartphones. After receiving heavy criticism last year for its 7nm Exynos 990 chip, Samsung wants to bounce back with its most advance chip yet that’s based on a more efficient 5nm EUV process.
According to Samsung, the switch from 7nm to 5nm EUV provides a 10% boost in power and 20% reduction in power consumption. The CPU features 8-cores with a Tri-cluster architecture. It features a single powerful ARM Cortex-X1 core which does the most heavy lifting and it’s clocked up to 2.9GHz.
Accompanying it is three high-performing Cortex-A78 cores and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. When combined, it pushes 30% better CPU performance compared to its predecessor in multi-core performance.
In the graphics department, the new SoC uses an ARM-Mali-G78 MP14 GPU which boasts a performance increase of 40%. Samsung added that it enables immservice on-screen mobile experiences such as AR/VR or Mixed Reality. The new chip also boasts an advanced multi-IP governor (AMIGO) technology which is designed to optimise power utilisation of CPU, GPU and other resources to prolong the device’s battery life during intensive usage.
The new chip also features a tri-core Neural Processing Unit (NPU) which speeds up AI-oriented tasks. The Exynos 2100 is rated to push 26-trillion-operations-per-second (TOPS) which is said to be more than double of its previous generation.
During the presentation, it highlighted the use of the NPU to enhance imaging capabilities. Coupled with its ISP and advanced algorithm, devices with the new chip will be able to support high-resolution cameras of up to 200MP. It can also support up to 6 individual cameras and process four concurrently.
With its multi-format codec (MFC), the new chip can support 4K video recording at 120fps and 8K videos with up to 60fps. Samsung also claims to be the industry’s first to utilise an AV1 Decoder to deliver 8K video playback.
In terms of connectivity, this is Samsung’s first 5nm SoC with an integrated 5G modem. This implementation allows it to save space, cut costs and reduce power consumption. The 5G modem supports mmWave bands with speeds up to 7.35Gbps, as well sub-6GHz networks with speeds of up to 5.1Gbps. It is also rated to deliver 3Gbps speeds on 4G with 1024-QAM.
On paper, the Exynos 2100 looks promising and its biggest competitor is Qualcomm’s 5nm Snapdragon 888. For Malaysia, it is likely that our Galaxy S21 series will be powered by this new Exynos chip. In case you missed it, the official launch of the Galaxy S21 will take place on the 14th of January 2021 at 11pm Malaysian time. Local pre-orders are expected to begin shortly after the global event.
