Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its new MBUX Hyperscreen, a massive 56″ (141cm) display that is covered by an anti-reflective Gorilla Glass material. Corning’s Gorilla Glass is normally found on personal devices like smartphones, tablets and smartwatches.
The German automaker claimed the Hyperscreen is ‘the biggest and most intelligent screen in a production Mercedes-Benz’. Though it appears as one single curved display, the Hyperscreen is actually made up of three separate screens: a 12.3″ digital instrument cluster, a 17.7″ centre display and a 12.3″ screen for the front passenger. It should be noted that both the centre and front passenger display use OLED technology.
Mercedes-Benz said the Hyperscreen uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) that learns the usage habits of the drriver and provides them with personalised suggestions. For example, if the driver often call their loved one on the way home every evening, the system will ask them if they would like to make that call when they next drive home.
Meanwhile, the centre display shows commonly used apps like maps, audio and phone controls. Mercedes-Benz said these apps were selected as they were the most common functions drivers used in prior MBUX iterations. Drivers can also use the “Hey Mercedes” voice command to access different features on the Hyperscreen.
The driver isn’t the only one who benefits from the massive screen, the front passenger also has their own display too. Mercedes-Benz calls it the Co-driver display and it enables the front passenger to access functions like navigation, the radio and entertainment functions. When the front seat is not occupied, the screen automatically changes to become a decorative part of the cabin and will display animated stars that feature the Mercedes-Benz logo.
There’s also ambient lighting installed in the lower part of the Hyperscreen that makes the whole display appear that it is “floating” above the instrument panel.
Mercedes-Benz did not release information about the Hyperscreen’s technical specifications, but they said it is powered by an eight-core CPU and 24GB of RAM.
It should be noted that having a massive display in the cabin may pose a risk to the driver and front passenger especially if an accident occurs. To this, Mercedes-Benz said the panel has been tested for safety, even in extreme circumstances. It said the glass features predetermined breaking points alongside the side outlet openings. In addition, it has five mounting points that yield in a targeted manner thanks to their honeycomb substructure.
“With our MBUX Hyperscreen, a design vision becomes reality” says Gorden Wagener, chief design officer at Daimler Group. “We merge technology with design in a fascinating way that offers the customer unprecedented ease of use. We love simplicity, we have reached a new level of MBUX,” he continued.
Mercedes-Benz announced that the MBUX Hyperscreen will be available as an option for its new top of the line EQS electric sedan (pictured above) which will be released later this year. The Stuttgart-based company teased the EQS during its presentation and boasted that the new EV will have a range of 700km on a single charge.
