Tony Fernandes: Airasia Food to democratise food delivery business

You might have missed Tony Fernandez when he took on the task of delivering food to hungry customers who used ordered through the Airasia app (iOS, Android). Still, Airasia Food offers attractive rates like no hidden fees and a 10% commission model to encourage merchants to join the platform.

“What we really want to do with Airasia Food is to democratise the food delivery business, especially for the merchants as the other players are charging an arm and a leg with high commission rates,” said Fernandez.

Airasia Food launched during the Movement Control Order (MCO) in May 2020. You can access the feature by downloading the Airasia app, then selecting “Food”, and picking out your order after confirming your location—just like how Foodpanda or Grabfood works.

Airasia Food’s flat-rates are equivalent to a 10% commission rate—much lower than Grab and Foodpanda’s 30% service fee. Fernandez said that this will enable merchants to “earn more while having full control of their menu, pricing and also easy access to data by being able to communicate directly to customers”.

“Our flat-rates are by far the cheapest in the food delivery industry, and we hope that this would be some sort of a ‘Merdeka’ for all the restaurants out there,” continues Fernandez.

Besides the lower commission fees, users are able to earn and pay with their BIG Points. Merchants are also able to immediately sign up online with no contracts or forms required, and reach more customers with a delivery coverage up to 60km.

Malaysians can already use the delivery feature, and Airasia Food plans to expand to Singapore by the end of January 2021. They will be expanding to other Asean cities next year. If you’re a merchant interested in adding Airasia Food to your delivery options, you can email them here.
