This is what Samsung’s foldable phones may look like in the future

So, foldable phones have already made their mark. We’ve seen the original Galaxy Fold (and the debacle that followed), the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and even clamshell foldables such as the Galaxy Z Flip and the Motorola Razr. However, it appears that the folks over at Samsung aren’t resting on their laurels, and there might be wackier designs to come.

The Samsung Display blog has just released two cartoon-ish sketches of possible new devices in the future. The blog is written entirely in Korean, and there aren’t any technical details available, but these are the two ideas suggested:

If you look at the image on the left, you’ll see a foldable phone with a triple folding display. This form-factor would mean that Samsung does away with the Cover Display on the current Z Fold 2, and uses a third of the folding screen as the front-facing display (when folded).

Meanwhile, the sketch on the right shows off flexible display that would be able to be rolled up into a tube for safe keeping. Of course, we’ve already seen this technology before (see LG’s rollable TV), and this would certainly be an interesting form-factor for a mobile device. The sketch also suggests that this would be a tablet, although it might be a combination of both; the lines are increasingly blurred nowadays.

Do note that this isn’t a confirmation from Samsung on what devices may actually arrive from them in the future. However, Samsung Display is the supplier of the Korean company’s screens, which suggests that the technology is at least available—or at least, in its infancy. For now, however, the upcoming Z Fold 3 will probably still look like the Z Fold 2, with some updates and changes, of course.

Guys, what do you think? Personally, I’m really excited at the idea of tablet/phone that I can simply roll up and stow away in my pocket, and it might also help with the fragility of flexible displays as well. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
