Health Ministry: MySejahtera has helped to detect over 9,000 COVID-19 cases in Malaysia

The Ministry of Health has revealed that MySejahtera has helped authorities to detect 18% of total COVID-19 cases in the country. The app was launched in April this year and it has become Malaysia’s default application for contact tracing.

According to the Ministry, the app has identified a total of 9,167 cases. 1,561 were detected through the app’s self-assessment feature while the remaining 7,606 cases were identified through contact tracing efforts by district health offices using MySejahtera’s database.

Citing Selangor’s Utama cluster as an example, MySejahtera had identified 17,260 users that have visited the shopping mall at a specific time. From the total figure, they have narrowed down the list to 1,343 users that were identified for further assessment by the district health office.

A total of 457 individuals were categorised as close contacts and further testing reveals 221 were found positive. The Utama cluster had recorded a total of 236 COVID-19 positive cases and 221 of them (93.6%) were identified via MySejahtera.

The app has accumulated a total of 1.7 billion QR-code check-ins at premises since launch and it is doing an average of 15 million check-ins daily. On top of that, the app has also helped to address 523,000 questions from the public.

According to the Health Ministry, the app has a total of 23,953,970 registered users and 1,058,853 registered premises. To drive adoption, the government has made the MySejahtera app a requirement in order to redeem the RM50 ePenjana eWallet credit. On top of that, authorities have also made it compulsory for all business owners to display the MySejahtera QR code at their premises.

The Ministry has assured that all data collected via the app complies with the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 and the Medical Act 1971. All personal data obtained are covered by the Personal Data Protection Act 2010. It also clarified that all check-in data will be archived after 30 days and it will be destroyed after 90 days.

MySejahtera is available on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store and Huawei App Gallery.
